Section 406. Locum tenens authorization to practice

12 AAC 40.406. Locum tenens authorization to practice

(a) A member or designee of the board may issue a locum tenens authorization to practice to a physician assistant for the purpose of temporarily substituting for another physician assistant licensed in this state if the applicant

(1) applies on a form provided by the department;

(2) pays the fee established in 12 AAC 02.250;

(3) is a physician assistant licensed under 12 AAC 40.400 or 12 AAC 40.405;

(4) assumes the existing collaborative relationship, under 12 AAC 40.410(a) - (d) and 12 AAC 40.980, between the physician who holds the collaborative relationship and the absent physician assistant; the applicant shall document assumption of the collaborative relationship by submitting a written agreement between the applicant and the collaborating physician; and

(5) has the application and collaborative relationship approved by a member or designee of the board.

(b) A locum tenens authorization to practice is valid for 45 days and may be extended by a member or designee of the board for another 45 days only.

(c) A physician assistant seeking a locum tenens authorization to practice in a location other than the one in which the collaborating physician practices must submit documented evidence to the authorizing board member or designee that previous experience as a physician assistant is sufficient to meet the requirements of the location assignment.
