7 AAC 43.110. Surgical assistants

(a) Subject to AS 47.05, AS 47.07, and this chapter, the division will pay for a physician or advanced nurse practitioner acting as a surgical assistant. A second surgical assistant will be paid at the same rate as the first surgical assistant if the bill is accompanied by an explanation from the surgeon of the need for the second assistant.

(b) The division will pay a physician acting as a surgical assistant the lesser of billed charges or 25 percent of the rate identified in the fee schedule established under 7 AAC 43.108. The division will pay an advanced nurse practitioner acting as a surgical assistant the lesser of billed charges or 25 percent of the rates established for advanced nurse practitioners under 7 AAC 43.922.

(c) Interns, residents in training, and physician assistants do not qualify for payment for services they render apart from the payment made to a physician.
