Section 790. Laboratory service

7 AAC 12.790. Laboratory service

(a) A facility which provides laboratory services must comply with 7 AAC 12.790 - 7 AAC 12.850.

(b) A facility must have and maintain written procedures on the scope of on-site laboratory services necessary to support the facility's emergency and patient care services. For those laboratory tests not performed on-site in the facility, the facility must make arrangements to meet the requirements of this section with an approved laboratory. Information specifying the laboratory tests performed on-site at the facility and laboratory tests available under arrangement must be provided to the medical staff.

(c) Laboratory tests must be performed in a timely fashion and the test results must be made available to the medical staff. Emergency laboratory services must be available at all times either in the facility or under contract with an approved laboratory.

(d) A facility must provide an autopsy service either by its laboratory or by contract with another institution.

(e) Personnel may carry out only laboratory procedures and perform only clinical laboratory tests which are within the scope of their training.

(f) A laboratory must have or have readily available from another source blood and blood products. A laboratory must maintain storage areas for blood and blood products under adequate control and supervision.

(g) Work areas must be ventilated and well lighted and convenient to sink, water, gas, suction, and electrical outlets.

(h) A laboratory must provide adequate space for clean-up, sterilization and administrative activities.
