General Help on Searching

This search uses the search engine from the NT WAIS toolkit. Searches are on the full text of the document; the search will return any documents that contain your search words. The documents are ranked according to the frequency of occurrence of the search words, and on whether the search words appear in the document title.

You can do simple boolean searches using AND, OR, NOT, and ADJ. Searching for "subsistence fish" is equivalent to searching for "subsistence or fish" and will return documents containing either word. Documents containing both will receive a higher score and will be returned first.

To limit your search to documents containing both words, use AND. Use NOT to exclude documents containing the following word. For example, to find documents about subsistence, but not about fishing, use "subsistence NOT fish." Use ADJto say that you would like the two words to be close together (within 40 words).   You can group any set of words being searched for in double-quotes to search for those words as a phrase.  Boolean operators are evaluated from left to right.

Multi-catagory Searches

Some of the search scripts on our site allow you to search multiple sections.   Keep in mind that clicking "search all sections" means that, no matter what sections you select after that, all sections will still be searched.  It also means that your search will take longer than selecting only a few sections.
