Section 660. Microwave oven design standards

18 AAC 85.660. Microwave oven design standards

This section specifies the design requirements which microwave ovens sold, transferred, demonstrated, or used in Alaska shall meet:

(1) Microwave oven doors shall be provided with a minimum of two mechanically and electrically independent interlocks designed to preclude the generation of microwaves unless the oven door is tightly shut;

(2) Failure of any single component of an oven shall not cause both interlocks to become operative;

(3) At least one interlock shall interrupt the primary power line to the microwave generator;

(4) At least one interlock shall be concealed and sufficiently inaccessible on a fully assembled oven to preclude overriding by the oven user with the use of mechanical, electrical, or magnetic aids;

(5) Formal oven service adjustments and procedures shall not affect the operability of the interlocks or shielding;

(6) A mechanical or electrical warning mechanism shall be conspicuously located on all microwave ovens to alert the user of an interlock failure;

(7) Insertion of an object into an oven while the door is closed shall not cause microwave oven radiation leakage from the oven to exceed the applicable exposure rate limit as specified.
