Section 480. Veterinary medicine radiographic installations

18 AAC 85.480. Veterinary medicine radiographic installations

All veterinary X-ray installations shall comply with the requirements of this section:

(1) A diagnostic type protective X-ray tube housing shall be used.

(2) Diaphragms, cones, or adjustable collimators shall be provided which restrict the useful beam to the area of the X-ray film and shall provide the same degree of protection as is required of the protective tube housing.

(3) Except when contraindicated for a particular radiographic purpose, the total filtration in the useful beam shall not be less than requirement of sec. 460(d) of this chapter.

(4) A device shall be provided to terminate the exposure after a preset time of exposure.

(5) A dead-man type of exposure switch shall be provided, together with an electrical cord of sufficient length so that the operator can stand out of the useful beam and at least six feet from the animal under examination during all X-ray exposures.

(6) All wall, ceiling, and floor areas shall be equivalent to, or provided with, applicable protective barriers as required in sec. 460(i), (j), and (k) of this chapter.

(7) The operator shall stand well away from the useful beam and the animal during radiographic exposure.

(8) Hand-held fluoroscopic screens shall not be used.

(9) No individual other than the operator shall be in the X-ray room while exposures are being made unless such individual's assistance is absolutely required.

(10) In any application in which an operator, or any other individual who may be assisting, is not located behind a protective barrier, a protective apron having a lead equivalent of not less than 0.5 millimeters shall be worn during exposures.

(11) No individual shall be regularly employed to hold or support animals or hold film during X-ray exposures.

(12) When an animal must be held in position for an exposure, mechanical supporting or restraining devices shall be used whenever feasible.

(13) If an animal must be held by an individual, that individual shall be adequately protected and shall be positioned so that no part of his body will be struck by the useful beam and so that his body is as far as possible from the edge of the useful beam.

(14) The exposure of any individual used for holding animals shall be monitored.
