12 AAC 48.021. Pharmaceutical agent use endorsement

(a) The board will, in its discretion, issue a license endorsement under AS 08.72.175 authorizing a licensee to use the pharmaceutical agents described in (c) of this section to a licensee who submits

(1) an application on a form provided by the department;

(2) the fee established in 12 AAC 02.300;

(3) verification of having passed the current National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) examination, first administered in 1988, or section nine of the former NBEO examination, titled "Ocular Pharmacology," administered before 1988; and

(4) if applicable, verification of having met the continuing education requirements of (b) of this section.

(b) An applicant for a pharmaceutical agent use endorsement who qualified for endorsement by taking section nine of the NBEO examination, titled "Ocular Pharmacology," before January 1, 1986, shall provide documentation of 12 contact hours of approved continuing education in ocular pharmacology or pathology completed within the four years preceding the date of application for endorsement.

(c) A licensee with an endorsement issued under this section may use a pharmaceutical agent in the practice of optometry if the pharmaceutical agent is topically applied to the human eye and its appendages and is a drug

(1) used for examination purposes only, within the categories of

(A) topically applied anesthetics;

(B) cycloplegics; or

(C) mydriatics; or

(2) within the category of miotics used, after consultation with an ophthalmologist or an optometrist who holds a pharmaceutical agent prescription and use endorsement, for treatment of an inadvertently induced angle closure.
