Chapter 35 . Embalming and Other Post-Mortem Services
Section 220. Disposition of clothing and other property

7 AAC 35.220. Disposition of clothing and other property

Immediately upon finding jewelry, money, papers, or other items of personal property with a decedent brought to the state medical examiner under AS 12.65, the state medical examiner or the state medical examiner's designee shall make a list of those items. Unless the item is held as evidence in a criminal or civil investigation, the state medical examiner shall release the item to a member of the decedent's family or other person that the state medical examiner determines to be responsible for the personal effects of the decedent. The state medical examiner shall retain the decedent's clothing for 72 hours after receipt of the decedent's body. After that time period has passed and unless the clothing is held as evidence in a criminal or civil investigation, the state medical examiner shall dispose of the clothing as a biohazard. However, the state medical examiner will, in the state medical examiner's discretion, release clothing that the state medical examiner determines is not a biohazard if the item is requested by a member of the decedent's family or other person responsible for the personal effects of the decedent within 72 hours after the body is delivered to the state medical examiner.
