Section 820. Laboratory service proficiency test program

7 AAC 12.820. Laboratory service proficiency test program

(a) A laboratory must successfully participate annually in a nationally recognized proficiency test program or a proficiency test program administered by the department for each testing service offered by the laboratory.

(b) The department must receive a copy of program participation results directly from the institution or agency conducting the proficiency test program. If a laboratory receives an evaluation of unsatisfactory or marginal performance in a particular laboratory testing service, it must, as determined by the department,

(1) refer all tests to be performed in that laboratory testing service to an approved laboratory;

(2) undertake a comprehensive in-service training program in that laboratory testing service; or

(3) comply with both (1) and (2) of this subsection.

(c) The department will, in its discretion, accept in lieu of an annual proficiency test program, a current certification of the laboratory by the College of American Pathologists. A copy of each inspection report by the College of American Pathologists, including deficiencies and recommendations, must be submitted to the department directly from the College of American Pathologists upon completion of each inspection.

(d) In this section, "nationally recognized proficiency test program" means a proficiency test program that is recognized by the American Association of Bioanalysts, Center for Disease Control, College of American Pathologists, or any other nationally recognized testing authority.

(e) In this section, "successfully" means at least three out of four survey-set results for each testing service are graded as acceptable by proficiency testers.
